4′ x 8′ Platform

Notes:

  • Is a frame that is hard covered and then legged to provide a surface to walk on.
  • These are stationary and often at different heights to provide varying levels on stage.
  • They are typically built out of 2×4 (nominal size) lumber, with the framing pieces laid on edge on the floor when assembling, and then covered on one side with a ‘hard cover’ like ¾” plywood.
  • The plan is for the main frame of the platform, legs can be cut to user’s specifications.
  • If the legs are taller than 18”, side bracing must be used to avoid lateral movement.
  • Platforms tend to be ‘squeaky’ if not glued properly. If glue is not used, consider using a sound dampener (like duvetyn) between joints and frame to lid.
  • For maximum strength and stability, use appropriate fasteners and wood glue.
  • Please note that when dimensions of lumber are given, the actual size will be followed by an inch (1”) or foot (1’) mark, while the nominal size will not.
  • Example: Nominal size = 1 x 3 vs Actual size = ¾” x 2 ½” (Learn more here)
  • Always check for square!
